March 2025 Blog Prompt: Running your business in a way that FEELS good for you, vs Doing what you are ‘supposed’ to do? Can we achieve balance?
Contributor of the prompt: *Clare Bennett
I’ve noticed there’s a lot of pressure out there about how we’re “supposed” to run our businesses. We’re told to follow certain strategies, post on social media constantly, and hustle non-stop. But honestly? That method is not effective for everyone, including myself. I’ve tried following all the so-called rules before, and it left me feeling drained and out of alignment with what really matters to me.
It’s easy to get caught up in doing what we think we should do, especially when everyone else seems to be doing it. But I’ve learned the hard way that building a business just to check off boxes doesn’t bring joy or fulfillment. It just leads to burnout and resentment. For me, living intentionally means making choices that align with my values and priorities. It’s about establishing a business that aligns with my lifestyle, not the other way around. This requires taking a step back and asking, does this feel right to me? Does this align with my purpose?
One of the hardest parts of running a business is balancing it with everything else that matters; family, health, faith, and just living life. I’ve found that being clear on my priorities makes all the difference. If I value quality time with my loved ones, then I need to set boundaries around my work hours. If my well-being is a priority, then I can’t ignore self-care.
I think balance is less about giving equal time to everything and more about being intentional with where you spend your energy. It’s about letting go of the “shoulds” and redefining success on your own terms. It’s not always easy, but when you build a business in a way that feels good to you, it becomes so much more fulfilling.
I’ve realized that the beauty of running your own business is having the freedom to do it your way. When you stay true to your values and let go of the pressure to do things “perfectly,” you create a business that feels good and supports a life you love.
If you’re feeling stuck trying to do what you “suppose” to do, maybe it’s time to let that go and start building a business that feels right for you.
