March 2025 Blog Prompt: Running your business in a way that FEELS good for you, vs Doing what you are ‘supposed’ to do? Can we achieve balance?
Contributor of the prompt: *Clare Bennett

This blog prompt challenged my brain and thinking.

Before I get into using “I” statements I want to share how many times over the years I have heard so many say, ‘they don’t feel like doing this or that’.  I have heard many say, ‘they don’t feel led to do this or that’, or ‘called to do this or that’.   I have even heard others share ‘they don’t have the energy for this’ and or use the words ‘I am not doing that because I am going to take some time for self care’.

I am absolutely not saying anyone is wrong in what they are experiencing and expressing but I have struggled with the urge to reach out, put a hand on each of their shoulders, give them a loving shake and remind them they are in BUSINESS and business doesn’t care how you feel, and or what you feel led to do – business is business and has requirements to be labeled as such.

I’ve always been driven by my business.  THIS DOES NOT mean I’ve always been wise, done what is right and properly handled my business.  It does mean though I have been able to always show up and do what I ‘know’ right or not right.

Are their days I don’t feel like it?  Oh, heck yes!  Crazy enough the fear of overwhelm keeps me from allowing this feeling to paralyze me for longer than merely 1 full day!  In thinking – is it the fear of overwhelm that keeps me coming back or is it the fear of missing out?  I’ll have to ponder that one.

I don’t feel like doing my bookkeeping!  This is one task I let go for months on end until I am absolutely NOT happy having to do it but I DO it!  Why?  Because it is a business requirement.

Down deep I am an introvert that can show up as an extrovert when I have to and I know showing up is in fact what builds my business.  This is where I think the blog prompt hits home for me.  How can I achieve balance in knowing I need to show up and be extroverted but dread it because I am an introvert?  That is a great question to ponder – the balance of it.  In my mind – I can leave when I want to – that is very empowering.  In my mind it’s a 2-hour event – I can see the end before I even arrive.  In my mind it is not every day I have to attend an event.  In my mind – my comfy clothes and laptop are waiting for me….

How do I achieve balance?  I put the task or tasks into perspective!

At the end of the day, I am a business owner.  I love being in business and an owner and I want to do what I need to do to hold that title and position.  I guess often this drives me to do what I may not feel like doing!

Thank you, Clare, for this prompt!
